Who Is Richard Liu?

Richard Liu Qiangdong is the president, founder, and board chair of Jingdong Mall (JD.com), one of China’s largest online retailers. Richard Liu is known as a self-made pioneer in business. According to the Forbes Real-Time Billionaire list, Richard Liu is worth $12.8 billion.

In 2017, Richard Liu Qiangdong became an official “Variety 500 Honoree” due to his hard work and service to the world.

Early life

Liu Qiangdong was born on March 10th, 1973, in the eastern region of the Jiangsu province. He was raised in poverty as the village he lived in lacked even the most basic necessities. His parents were key players in the shipping industry before they were forced to resettle due to communism. After losing their wealth, they worked as farmers in Chang’ an.

Educational background

When Liu was in high school, he applied to colleges in big cities. He believed that in the cities, he would be able to see more of what he had been missing. He excelled in his exams and got into Renmin University, where he studied and earned his degree in sociology. Qiangdong had an interest in politics which got overshadowed after unearthing his interest in computers. He was lucky enough to get a job in a local business where he gained computer programming skills.

Richard Liu opened a restaurant while still in college, but it did not take off; the restaurant was out of business in less than a year. However, this did not slow him down; he later started Jingdong in 1998, where he sold magneto-optical products. The stall grew aggressively, and in a few years, he managed to open 12 stores in Beijing, China.

In 2003, the stores were forced to shut down due to the SARS epidemic. This did not stop him as he converted his business to an online business, and over the years, the business grew to what it is now, JD.com. Richard Liu’s commitment and integrity have seen JD.com become the third-largest retail company in the world.
